Bee Quest is a math test prep game designed specifically for 5th grade. It gets students up and moving around the classroom to solve math problems posted as different types of “bees.” Working in hives (teams), students collaborate to solve problems, earn nectar tokens, and race to become the Top Hive.

It’s like a scavenger hunt meets math review—and it’s packed with variety and challenge.

📋 How the Game Works:

Students find and solve problems assigned to different types of bees:

• 🐝 Worker Bees – Standard 5th grade math problems (1 point)

• 👑 Queen Bees – Multi-step word problems (2 points)

• 🍯 Nectar Bees – Bonus or riddle problems (2 points + nectar token)

• 🌀 Bumble Bees – Error analysis problems (1 bonus point)

• 🚀 Drone Bees – Mixed review challenges (1 point)

Students can only pick up 2 problems at a time and must work as a team to solve them before moving on. They record their work on a Bee Tracker, collect nectar tokens, and return for final scoring.

Learn all about powers of 10 and how to identify the base number, exponent, and the meaning of “powers” in math.

5th grade students are introduced to powers of 10 early on in the school year. The Common Core Standards explains the learning targets for this skill as follows:

• Explain patterns in the number of zeros of the product when multiplying a number by powers of 10, and explain patterns in the placement of the decimal point when a decimal is multiplied or divided by a power of 10. Use whole-number exponents to denote powers of 10.

WHAT IS A POWER OF 10?

According to mathematics, the power of ten is any of the integers powers of the number multiplied by 10. In simple words, it means that we multiply ten by itself a certain number of times (when the power is a positive integer). Moreover, in the definition of the number 1 is a power (the zeroth power) of ten.

I discovered Boom Learning a few weeks ago while searching for new ways to create digital content for the students I serve as an Instructional Coach.

My school uses Google Classroom for grades 2 and up so I had been focusing on creating Google Apps resources to share with those teachers. But my Kindergarten and First Grade teachers had been struggling to get work to their students during the  COVID19 school closures. Boom Cards came up in one of the searches and I was instantly addicted.

What are BOOM Cards?

Boom Cards are digital, self checking, interactive task cards that can be used in any device with internet access. A Boom Learning account must be set up by the teacher in order to assign the decks to her students. Setting up an account is super easy and free and the best part  – it is compatible with Google Classroom. This means that you can import your classroom rosters from Google Classrooms and students would log in through Google.

What’s so special about Boom Cards?

They are self checking, meaning students get immediate feedback. They can save their progress and go back and finish later.

Teachers get live reports on student progress and mastery. They can also assign decks to specific students or the whole class, making differentiation easy to accomplish.

It’s easy to create your own and your students will love completing them.
